Bible- Check!

There was no room on my desk for my Bible. Planner- check! Notepad- check! Christian self help book- check! Computer- check! Bible- nope. I realized then and there that I needed to make God’s Word a priority in my life.

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Since that day of discovering no Bible on my desk, I have placed reading God’s Word first. Although this doesn’t always look like me waking up before sunrise to crack open my Bible, reading God’s Word has become a daily cornerstone in my life.

Whether it be during naptime, in the morning, or after your kids go to bed, read God’s Word. It will change your heart. Through reading the Bible you invite Jesus to become your best friend, and reign over your life.

Fair warning, those heart changes the Bible stirs in you might not be convenient or comfortable. Jesus’ presence shows up when we read God’s Word. The Holy Spirit will come in and tug on your heart throughout the day when you read the Bible and pray. Help your neighbor, assist that friend in need, befriend that lonely mother. The Holy Spirit will call you out and command you to obey. Listen for the Holy Spirit’s promptings throughout the day. God’s voice becomes much more audible when we are reading his life-giving, breathing, active, heart changing Word.

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:5-6

God’s Word shows us the way. Like a flashlight, or a candle in the dark, the Bible illuminates our lives when we read it. It reveals yuckiness in our hearts that we never even knew was there. It compels us to forgive. It commands us to tell the truth. It demands we speak the name of Jesus. God’s Word sanctifies our lives.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for your Word. Thank you for the promises it provides, the hope it assures, and the joy it brings to my heart. Thank you Jesus.

Help me to realize your incalculable love for me through reading your Word. Let your love overflow out of my life and into my daily living. Show me the Way, Truth, and Life through the Bible.

Jesus, I need more of you. Fill me to the brim with your love. Help me to cultivate the discipline of reading your Word daily. Help me to prioritize you through reading your perfect, pleasing, holy Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
