I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Have you ever felt completely empty inside? There have been times that I have forgotten what my life looked like before becoming a mom. There have been moments of wishing that I could take back a piece of the freedom from my former life. There have been daily struggles of feeling like what I do is insignificant. I love my children, oh so much. But my friends, motherhood is a sacrifice. It makes us holier, and draws us closer to the heart of God.
Although we go unnoticed, that does not mean the God of the Universe does not recognize our outpouring of love and care. I have a theory that God notices us even more as moms, because we go unnoticed by the world. In the Bible, Jesus always had this special way of taking care of those the world deemed insignificant: the lepers, the blind, the lame, women, and children.
Motherhood demands we set aside what we would like to do and trade it in for what needs to be done for our children. Being a mom is a selfless role, no doubt. That does not discount the difficulty it takes to lay down our lives in order for our children to live their best lives. It is an amazing role. Still, the process of selfless sacrifice can be a painful one.
I have found that the longer I am enlisted in this mom gig, the easier the sacrifice is to make. But when I became a brand new mom, the transition from taking care of me to taking care of “we” was a difficult one. I want you to know that you are not alone. You are seen, heard, and loved. In motherhood and in life God notices your hard work and sacrifice. Mama, you are beautiful in the Lord’s sight.
Dear Jesus,
Thank you for the gift of motherhood. Thank you that I get to be a mom and be transformed through this holy process. Rid me of myself. Help my heart to reflect more of you. Fill me to the brim with your holy presence, each day. Amen
