Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12:1-3
Being a mom is like treading water for an extended period of time. Then you have your second child. While still treading water, you have just been handed a baby! Being a mom is not an easy feat. This is no secret. But what is the purpose behind the struggle?
I’ve heard it said, you can’t pour from an empty cup. As a mother I beg to differ. This is what we are called to do, every day. Christ divinely meets us in the middle of our struggles and is our strength. Having an empty cup is the perfect opportunity for Christ to be able to step in and provide his miraculous portion for our every need.
We are called to be faithful. In matters big and matters small, we must rise up to the occasion of our calling and be joyful creations as mothers who live life with Christ in the driver’s seat of our lives. We must mother our children with the heart of God in mind. We must have God’s Word written upon our hearts.
Keep running your race, with all of your might. All of the pain, the toil, and the trials you face as a mom are not in vain. Use them to proclaim his name. Lean in and depend upon Christ like never before. He is the only one able to fill our empty hearts and make us feel complete. He is the giver of promising peace and lasting joy.
The purpose of the struggle as moms is so that we learn to rely on Christ as our strength and support in life. There will be highs and lows in motherhood and in life. The secret is learning to lean in on Christ through it all. The purpose of motherhood is to sanctify our hearts, to renew our minds, and to transform our entire selves to be more like Christ Jesus.
Dear Jesus,
Transform me into your image. Help me to reflect your light in my life. Meet me in my emptiness. Fill my cup and be my portion today. In Jesus’ heavenly name I pray, amen.
